We are more than just theatre!
Starting March 12th 7-9pm
A six week course “The Play’s the Thing”, will focus on Mysteries on Stage with retired Bennington College professor Sally Sugarman beginning Thursday March 12th from 7 to 9 p.m. and running for six weeks at the Bennington Performing Arts Center/Home of Oldcastle Theatre Company.
“The play is the thing, wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the king” Hamlet declares as he seeks evidence to support or challenge the information he received from his father’s ghost. That play within the play is called “The Mousetrap”. Several centuries later, another play will also be called “The Mousetrap.” Between these two plays, mysteries have intrigued readers, playgoers, movie fans, and television viewers. Each medium presents challenges to tellers of mystery tales. From Oedipus Rex on, violent crimes have been presented and solved on stage. The course, being taught as part of the Bennington’s Year of the Mystery created by the Baker’s Street Irregulars Club, will examine some of the most unique and popular of contemporary mystery plays.
They will be placed in their historical context and the class will discuss some of the other pays examined that also held audiences enthralled,” according to Ms. Sugarman. The plays to be examined include ‘The Mousetrap’, ‘Sleuth’,’ Deathrap’, ‘The Real Inspector Hound’, ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood’, and ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime.’ Each class will include a powerpoint presentation and discussion of the mysterious elements of the play.
